Acrylic pouring
Acrylic Pouring is a technique where we pour fluid acrylic paint onto a surface.
During my next LIVE session on Instagram hosted by Pellas Gallery, we will go through the process of preparation and execution of a basic acrylic pour and open your mind to the possibilities of this practice.
As with everything to do with paint and color in my experience, this practice can be very therapeutic and allows you to experience letting go and experience flow in a very literal way.
As for now, here are the materials you will need to start:
Acrylic paint.You can use beginners or professional grade acrylic paint. Choose the colors you would like to use, think about contrast of colors or white and black to make sure you create interesting relations within the colors.
Surface you will pour on.We recommend using small canvas (fabric or wood) to begin with. You can also use anyflat & solid surface you would like to give this effect too. As long as it is level it will work. If is your first time pouring we recommend a ‘small’ surface to have more control, also have more than one on hand! As once you do one you will probably want to do more!
Mixing medium. Floetrol, is a medium that thins house Paint to leave no brushstrokes and works perfectly for this technique. You can find Floetrol at any hardware store. If you don’t feel like going to the hardware store and have white glue at home you can use that as well. You will have to thin the Glue with water before proceeding to mix the colors in.
Water.
Small Plastic containers. Such as plastic cups. If possible try to recycle plastic containers from your household use to minimize single use plastic. (you can reuse these containers)
Stir sticks.Old brushes, popsicle sticks, etc.
Surface protection.A lot of spilling can happen while pouring, make sure you protect your table or floor with cloth or plastic.
Suspension. Just after you pour, you have to leave your piece suspended from the floor. You can use the same upside-down plastic cups, blocks, metal racks, etc.
Gloves and protective clothes.
