The beginning of MACh

This photo was taken just moments after I told friends that I wanted to name the clothing I’ve been making after my grandmother, using her initials—M.A.Ch. It was her signature and the brand she once used for the handbags she designed for a time.

I like to think I inherited her constant thirst for creation. She would tell me how she used to buy a single school uniform, copy the pattern, and sew uniforms for all her children. She sewed magnificent dresses throughout her life, and in her later years, she designed outfits for her great-granddaughters and had them made.

Creativity lived in every breath she took—each one full of conviction and spark. Every day was a project. I understand that energy; I live in that light. The ignition of an idea and the drive to see it through is what fuels me.

While painting remains a constant in my life, I love exploring new materials—paper, pigments, old photos, fabrics. These mediums tether me to the material world, because otherwise, my mind is floating on a cloud up high.

Sewing is a new skill I’m developing, and you can follow along on @mach_made or via my newsletter. I’m not sure how long it’ll last, but I’m adding it to my box of life treasures—along with painting, the power to see beauty, scrambled words, and my unsolicited therapy services (IYKYK).

Me gusta pensar que heredé su sed constante de creación. Me contaba cómo solía comprar un solo uniforme escolar, copiaba el patrón y cosía los uniformes para todos sus hijos. A lo largo de su vida cosió vestidos magníficos, y en sus últimos años diseñó atuendos para sus bisnietas y los mandaba a hacer.

La creatividad vivía en cada respiro que tomaba—cada uno lleno de convicción y chispa. Cada día era un proyecto. Entiendo esa energía; vivo en esa luz. La chispa de una idea y las ganas de llevarla a cabo son lo que me impulsa.

Aunque la pintura sigue siendo una constante en mi vida, me encanta explorar nuevos materiales—papel, pigmentos, fotos antiguas, telas. Estos medios me anclan al mundo material, porque de otro modo, mi mente estaría flotando en una nube muy arriba.
