In 2016, while in Nicaragua, I painted a collection inspired by El Güegüense, the country’s beloved folk theater of masks, music, and dance. Rooted in centuries of Indigenous and colonial history, the Güegüense is a sly, witty character who uses humor and cleverness to outsmart those in power. It’s a story of resistance, celebration, and spirit that still dances through the streets of Nicaragua today.
